Tools for Timon

Tools for Timon
CREW
CREW is an international team of researchers, performers, technologists, dramaturgs, musicians, programmers, writers and designers with currently at its core two artists: Eric Joris and Isjtar Vandebroeck. As an arts company crossing the boundaries of art, science and technology, CREW continues to ask a simple question: how does technology change us?

Project Objective

Tools for Timon will develop a performance-machine that enables artists to create and perform and audiences to experience complex stories, grounded in VR. It enables curators and producers to engage diverse locations in new ways and for larger audiences. The relevance of our proposal lies in the empowering and enriching of spatial and time based events in the Creative Industries, Heritage, Education and the Arts, with tools for live creation, adapted to different types of venues and use cases.

Context

XR and live physical performance is currently an enormous challenge for both creators and developers. The technology is daunting, physical constraints and logistical issues often mean that the medium is not used to its full capabilities.
CREW will apply their experience in developing performances with XR, Motion Capture and other immersive technologies to develop Tools for Timon. This framework aims to break down the barrier of entry by developing a robust starting point that will allow artists and performers to create their own works.
Co-located multiplayer VR, tracked physical objects, large area tracking and other features will be components of the framework, providing a vast array of tools and methods. It will aim to make developing immersive performances for a wide variety of situations and locations possible. From the living room, to a whole multi-room exhibition space.

Project Goals

CREW aims to develop and release the Embodied XR Performance Framework providing creators and developers a starting point for their own ambitious XR performances. This framework will be flexible, allowing for experiences to be made for spaces as small as a living room to large multi-space exhibition areas. The border between the digital and physical will be blurred, with for example live motion captured actors and physical interaction with tracked objects. While expansive, this framework will not be overwhelming. Comprehensive documentation will help creators to fulfil their vision.
