Evaluating the Impact of Financial Support on XR Development: A Case Study of EMIL’s FSTP Program

The results reveal that EMIL’s Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP) program had a significant positive impact on various projects, with 84.6% of respondents affirming receipt of funding and expressing high satisfaction with the support received. The financial boost was essential for advancing their products and services, making commercialisation possible and hastening market readiness. However, respondents noted that the importance and usefulness of technical and content support, as well as networking opportunities among FSTP projects, varied. There is a consensus on the need for better cooperation, funding, and market strategies to overcome existing obstacles in the XR field in Europe. These obstacles include a lack of investment, dependency on the few large international companies, and regulatory challenges, particularly concerning medical devices. The suggestions for improvement included fostering standards, facilitating funding to bring products to market, and reducing reliance on non-European technology in the XR space. Despite these challenges, the EMIL programme was regarded as an exceptional initiative for fostering collaboration and innovation, demonstrating the successful application of European funding in tech project development.
